Jeffries also said that conversations between senior Democrats and Republicans have “accelerated” in recent days and that it’s his hope they will continue to do so tonight. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries indicated that his caucus would be open to reaching some form of agreement with “traditional Republicans” to reopen the House, saying that informal conversations have “accelerated” the last few days and that it’s his hope they will continue.

The Senate had quietly slipped out of the city while insurgents in the House demanded more power as the nation watched anxiously.
The vote for a new speaker comes on the heels of the ouster of Kevin McCarthy, which took place days after he struck a deal with Democrats to avert a government shutdown. Representative Matt Gaetz of Florida introduced the motion to remove Mr. McCarthy, and along with seven other far-right Republicans and all the House Democrats, he succeeded. Others railed against Mr. Emmer’s vote in favor of a stopgap spending bill put forward by Mr. McCarthy, the speaker at the time, to avert a government shutdown. Historically, there have been several controversial elections to the speakership, such as the contest of 1839. Two rival delegations, one Whig and the other Democrat, had been certified as elected by different branches of the New Jersey government.
Mr. Johnson has opposed continued funding for the war in Ukraine, which has emerged as a bitter fault line in the G.O.P. and in the spending battles that he will have to navigate in the coming days. Evoking his evangelical Christian faith, Mr. Johnson repeatedly referred to scripture in his speech from the House floor. They also were unhappy that he had suggested in an interview on Fox News that the House committee investigating the terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya, had the political aim of damaging Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. The practice of earmarking — where a single lawmaker can use a sliver of the sprawling government budget to send money to a specific project in his or her state — has been both embraced and reviled over the years.
Emmer voted to certify the 2020 election results after Jan. 6, 2021, but signed onto an amicus brief asking the Supreme Court to overturn the presidential election results. Trump seemed to acknowledge his role in killing Emmer's quest for the gavel, as he shared on his social media platform an article from Politico about how the former president "torpedoed" the bid. Former President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social, his social media site, early Wednesday to urge House Republicans to back Johnson for speaker, less than a day after he effectively derailed Majority Whip Tom Emmer's own bid for the gavel.
Johnson has gained stature and won bipartisan praise for letting the whole House vote on the aid package. He also got strong support in the Senate, where even an outright majority of Republicans voted for the aid on Tuesday. As Rep. Jim Jordan meets with a number of allies in hopes of swaying key holdouts to his speakership bid, GOP sources say his opposition could grow if the votes continue over multiple rounds of ballots. In a letter to colleagues earlier Wednesday, Johnson outlined his first priority will be trying to pass the remaining spending bills that have so far languished in the House one by one. The temple is open for visits, and tours are offered by appointment. The Kelley House Museum is a fascinating place to browse if you enjoy learning about the history of the places you visit. Dedicated to preserving the history of the Mendocino Coast, the museum has several interesting artifacts and photos on display. Handley Cellars is also located close to town, and they offer both walk-in tastings and experiences by appointment. Kayak Mendocino offers guided kayak tours of the sea caves and tide pools at Van Damme State Park. There are other hiking trails in the park, and some biking trails as well.

South of Mendocino, Point Arena Lighthouse is gorgeous, and a must-visit. North of Mendocino is the little town of Fort Bragg, famous for its glass beaches. A California Historic Landmark, the temple is thought to be the first Chinese Joss House in rural California. The original fabric with the image of Kwan Tai was recently damaged, but you can still see an image of the deity, along with other ceremonial objects. At the southern end of the beach, you will find good tidepooling at low tide.
To the southeast is Anderson Valley, the charming wine country of Mendocino County. Drive Highway 128 and explore the wineries along the scenic route! Some of them are small and family-owned, and you may even be able to chat with the vintner as you sip. The museum also organizes walking tours of the historic part of town, and they are super fun and informative. The town of Mendocino is a National Historic Landmark and the tour is a great way to learn more about it. The Point Cabrillo Light Station State Historic Park is located just three miles north of Mendocino Village, and includes the lighthouse and three lightkeepers’ houses and outbuildings.
